Day Itinerary

Day 1 : Depart the USA

Our trip begins with an overnight flight to Bucharest, the capital of Romania.

Day 2 : Arrive in Bucharest

We are joined by a local English-speaking guide for a tour of Bucharest, known as “Little Paris” for its elegant architecture. We’ll see the Palace of Parliament, the world’s heaviest building and the second-largest administrative building after The Pentagon, and the Arcul de Triumf, an enormous granite arch built in memory of Romania’s Independence. Next we get to know our traveling companions during a Holiday Vacations Welcome Dinner followed by a restful night in the city.  D

Day 3 : Carpathian Mountains & Dracula’s Castle

After breakfast, we travel by motorcoach into the Carpathian Mountains. These mountains have some of the largest concentrations of old-growth forest in all of Europe. Enjoy sights of lush grasslands and soaring ridgelines on our way to Brasov. We’ll tour the city and visit Dracula’s Castle, known as Bran Castle to the locals, whose Gothic architecture, imposing towers, and peculiar aura have influenced the legend of history’s most famous vampire. Our comfortable accommodations are near Brasov tonight.  B,D

Day 4 : Embarkation

This morning we return to Bucharest to board our beautiful Amadeus Cruise ship in Fetesti on the banks of the Danube River delta. There is time to settle into our staterooms and explore the vessel before we join our Tour Director for a special Welcome Reception & Voyage Dinner.  B,D

Day 5 : Danube Delta

Relax on the deck as we cruise the Danube Delta, enjoying the sunshine off the glistening water en route to our first port of call. Today’s included excursion is a safari on the Danube Delta.   B,L,D

Day 6 : Harsova & Constanta

Our ship docks in the beautiful town of Harsova. Visit Carsium, an ancient Roman settlement, and the extraordinary Lipovan church that overlooks the community. In the afternoon, visit the historic port city of Constanta on the Black Sea’s coast. Greek colonists founded this ancient metropolis during the 6th century BC.   B,L,D

Day 7 : Veliko Tarnovo & Arbanassi

Today’s course along the Danube River is also the territorial boundary between Bulgaria and Romania. Explore the Bulgarian cities of Arbanassi, famous for its painted churches and artist market, and Veliko Tarnovo, located on the banks of the river Yantra and known as the “City of the Tsars. B,L,D

Day 8 : Iron Gates

As we cruise between Serbia and Romania we pass through an imposing gorge with steep cliffs on either side. Known as The Iron Gates of the Danube, this extraordinary natural feature is sure to be a cruise highlight. B,L,D

Day 9 : Belgrade

Serbia’s beautiful capital is our port of call today. At the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers, Belgrade is one of the oldest capitals in Europe. Major sites include the Kalemegdan-Belgrade Fortress, Parliament, and the St. Sava Church, Serbia’s largest Orthodox church. The afternoon is yours to peruse the city at your leisure. B,L,D

Day 10 : Mohacs & the Puszta

Discover a melting pot of nations and culture as well as outstanding cuisine in the Hungarian village of Mohacs. Take historical journey to see how paprika became the “red gold” of the Kalosca region. At the Paprika House we’ll taste cakes baked with paprika before enjoying a traditional folk dance performance. Our journey continues into Hungary’s great grassland, the Puszta, to admire the beauty of Hungarian half-blood horses as they demonstrate their special gallops and gaits. B,L,D

Day 11 : Budapest

Today we explore Budapest. See the imposing Parliament Building, the Millennium Monument in Hero’s Square, and the neo-renaissance Opera House. Our included excursion is a tour of the Royal Palace of Gödöllő, the favorite summer residence of Empress Elisabeth and Emperor Franz Josef of Austria. Tonight we enjoy a Hungarian evening onboard our ship and a special illumination cruise of Budapest. B,L,D

Day 12 : Bratislava

We arrive in Bratislava for an included city tour. See Bratislava Castle atop a hill in the Little Carpathian Mountains, St. Martin’s Cathedral in the historic city center, and the neoclassical Primate’s Palace. B,L,D

Day 13 : Vienna

This morning we disembark our cruise ship in Vienna. The grand sights of Vienna await us today as we tour the historic city center. Gaze over the famous Gothic St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the quirky Expressionist house known as Hundertwasserhaus, and the former imperial Hofburg Palace. Tonight we enjoy a marvelous concert featuring the sounds of Mozart and Strauss and our final evening at a well-appointed hotel in the city. B,D

Day 14 : Return Home

We fly home from Vienna with incredible memories of our European adventure.
