Day 1 : Depart the USA
Our trip begins with an overnight fight to Vienna, the capital of Austria.
Day 2 : Arrive in Vienna
We land in Vienna and check-in to our hotel in the Austrian capital. Tonight we get to know our fellow traveling companions at a Holiday Vacations Welcome Dinner.
Day 3 : Vienna
The grand sights of Vienna await us today as we tour the historic city center with a local English-speaking guide. Gaze over the famous Gothic St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the quirky Expressionist house known as Hundertwasserhaus, and the former imperial Hofburg Palace. In the afternoon we board the Amadeus Queen and begin our adventure along the Danube. All meals are included aboard ship!
Day 4 : Bratislava
This morning we arrive in Bratislava for an included city tour. See Bratislava Castle atop a hill in the Little Carpathian Mountains, St. Martin’s Cathedral in the historic city center, and the neoclassical Primate’s Palace. In the afternoon we may explore the city at leisure.
Day 5 : Budapest
Today we explore Budapest. See the imposing Parliament Building, the Millennium Monument in Hero's Square, and the neo-renaissance Opera House. Tonight we enjoy a Hungarian evening onboard our ship and a special illumination cruise of Budapest.
Day 6 : Kopački Rit Nature Park
This morning we arrive at the city of Vukovar in eastern Croatia. In the afternoon our included shore excursion takes us to the Kopački Rit Nature Park, one of Europe’s most important wetlands. The confluence of the Danube and the Drava meet in these beautiful backwaters, providing an important ecosystem for birds, fish, and mammals that live in the region.
Day 7 : Belgrade
Serbia’s beautiful capital is our port of call today. At the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers, Belgrade is one of the oldest capitals in Europe. Major sites include the Kalemegdan-Belgrade Fortress, Parliament, and the St. Sava Church, Serbia’s largest Orthodox church. The afternoon is yours to peruse the city at your leisure. This evening we visit the city’s artist quarter Skadarlija for a Serbian-style dinner accompanied by music.
Day 8 : The Iron Gates
As we cruise between Romania and Serbia we pass through an imposing gorge with steep cliffs on either side. Known as The Iron Gates of the Danube, this extraordinary natural feature is sure to be a cruise highlight.
Day 9 : Veliko Tarnovo
Today’s course along the Danube River is also the territorial boundary between Bulgaria and Romania. Explore Bulgaria’s oldest town Veliko Tarnovo, located on the banks of the river Yantra and known as the "City of the Tsars."
Day 10 : Danube Delta
Relax on the deck as we cruise to the Danube Delta, enjoying the sunshine off the glistening water en route to our last port of call in Bucharest. Today’s included excursion is a safari on the Danube Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of lagoons and waterways that are a sanctuary for around 300 species of birds.
Day 11 : Bucharest
This morning we disembark our ship and tour Bucharest, known as “Little Paris” for its elegant architecture. We’ll see the Palace of Parliament, the world’s heaviest building and the second-largest administrative building after The Pentagon, and the Arcul de Triumf, an enormous granite arch built in memory of Romania’s Independence.
Day 12 : The Carpathian Mountains
After breakfast we travel by motorcoach into the Carpathian Mountains. These mountains have some of the largest concentrations of old-growth forest on all of Europe! Enjoy sights of lush grasslands and soaring ridgelines our way to Sinaia for a tour of Peleş Castle, the first European castle with electricity and striking neoclassical architecture. We return to Bucharest and celebrate our Danube Delta Cruise with a Holiday Vacations Farewell Dinner with another restful night in the city.
Day 13 : Return Home
We fly home from Bucharest with incredible memories of our European adventure.
