Day 1 : Ciao Italia!
Our wonderful Italian vacation begins with an overnight flight to Rome.
Day 2 : Ancient Rome
Our English-speaking Italian guide joins us as we discover the fascinating sights and landmarks of ancient Rome. Tour the Colosseum, the largest amphitheatre in the world, and walk the same steps of the ancient gladiators as we learn about the history of this famous arena. We will walk the Roman Forum, once the governmental and financial center of the city and home to several of Rome’s best preserved pieces of architecture including the Arch of Constantine. We will also visit Rome’s famous and mythical Palatine Hill.
Tonight we get to know our fellow travelers at a special Holiday Vacations Welcome Dinner.
Day 3 : Vatican & The Sistine Chapel
Begin each day with a delicious Italian breakfast.
We join our knowledgeable guide for a tour of the famous Vatican Museums featuring some of the world’s most renowned classical sculptures and Renaissance art. Explore the Vatican’s many galleries including the famous Sistine Chapel. Truly a magnificent sight to behold, the iconic ceiling fresco was painted by Michelangelo. Our visit to Vatican City continues with a special tour of St. Peter’s Basilica, one of the most extraordinary churches in the world and the home of the Catholic Church. Discover the immense history and relics including the Altar of the Sacred Heart, the Chair of Saint Peter and Michelangelo’s Pietà.
With the afternoon at leisure you may visit Saint Peter’s Square, climb the Spanish Steps, visit the Pantheon, or explore the statues and cafés of Piazza Navona.
Day 4 : Naples & Pompeii
We say farewell to Rome and travel southeast to the region of Campania. We will be surrounded by spectacular views of the Italian countryside so keep your cameras handy.
We arrive in the coastal city of Naples, the birthplace of pizza, whose modern metropolitan wonder matches its storied Greco-Roman history. Tour the Old Town district featuring the public square Piazza del Plebiscito, the 130 year-old shopping center Galleria Umberto I, and the Royal Palace, once the residence of Bourbon kings.
Taste the local flavors during an included lunch at a local pizzeria.
In the afternoon we arrive at the archaeological site of Pomeii, the ancient city buried in volcanic ash after nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted in the first century, and take in a guided tour.
We arrive at our hotel near Sorrento on the exquisite Amalfi Coast and check-in for a four-night stay.
Day 5 : The Island of Capri
This morning we board a ferry and set out into the Tyrrhenian Sea with our sights on Capri, a picturesque island of dramatic limestone cliffs, charming seaside communities, and lush forested valleys.
Arrive at the heart of the island and see its Piazzetta and the Gardens of Augustus, a botanical garden with gorgeous views of the Faraglioni cliffs – limestone spires that rise out of the sea.
Next we travel to the Church of San Michele, one of the island’s most scenic churches. Witness the jaw-dropping artistry of its hand-painted ceramic tile floor, dating back to the mid-18th century and depicting Adam, Eve, and the Garden of Eden.
We return to the mainland by ferry and have the evening to relax.
Day 6 : The Amalfi Coast
The Mediterranean landscape of sun-kissed Amalfi is ours to explore today. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is widely known for its natural beauty, picturesque coastal cities, and terraced vineyards. On our guided tour we will visit many panoramic stops including the Amalfi Cathedral, Bell Tower, and The Cloister of Paradise.
Visit the colorful seaside village of Positano, described by author John Steinbeck as “the only vertical place in the world.”
Taste Limoncello, a sweet Italian liqueur famously produced in this region from the zest of lemons.
In Ravello, visit the magnificent Villa Rufolo, a magnificent 13th century country house whose romantic patio gardens look down on the Amalfi Coast and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Day 7 : Private Italian Cooking Class
Discover the secrets of traditional Italian cuisine during a hands-on private cooking class in Sorrento.
We’ll also visit the Villa Ida wine cellar and taste homemade wine matched with fresh local cheeses. Later we savor the cuisine we have personally prepared outdoors in the temperate Mediterranean climate.
The remainder of the day is ours to explore the Sorrento area at leisure. Cool off with some fresh gelato, find souvenirs at Old Town, or watch the sun go down during after-dinner drinks at a beachside restaurant.
Day 8 : Mount Vesuvius
Just north of Sorrento, get a closer look at the volcano that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum almost 2,000 years ago. Arrive at the base of the crater by motorcoach where we may walk the rest of the way to the crater.
An included lunch is served at the foot of the mountain.
In the afternoon we travel northwest to Montecassino and tour its 6th century Benedictine abbey, also a museum featuring incredible paintings, manuscripts, and ancient texts. In World War II the abbey was part of the 100-mile Gustav Line, designed to hold Allied troops’ advance into Italy.
Afterwards we return to illustrious Rome, check-in to our hotel, and celebrate our Italian adventure with our new friends at a Holiday Vacations Farewell Dinner.
Day 9 : Arrivederci, Italia
We return home with lifelong memories of our vacation in Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast.
