TOURtales - Sue M.

The culture of Hawaii may be my favorite part of the islands. “Ohana,” the Hawaiian word for family, is truly the islands’ motto. Hawaiians are a welcoming and loving community. “Mahalo,” the Hawaiian word for thank you, cannot fully express the thanks you feel in this tropical paradise. Lastly, the word “aloha” conveys hello, goodbye and love. Oahu, my home island, boasts the busy, beautiful Waikiki Beach. Everything is within steps of our hotel but you may want to take some of your free time and enjoy snorkeling at Hanauma Bay. The bay is an exquisite volcanic caldera where you may walk into crystal clear water and snorkel in tranquil, shallow ocean water. In the evening, I love to go to the beach and watch the sun set into the Pacific Ocean. Pick up some light fare at a restaurant, or purchase snacks at a local farmers market, and pick out a spot on the beach to enjoy the show. Keep a close watch for the “green flash,” a split second moment when the sun sets into the turquoise ocean and emits a neon green flash. It is very rare to see but can be a memory of a lifetime. Speaking of food, you may want to try a Malasada Portuguese doughnut, a local treat sometimes served warm, or a refreshing shaved ice topped with tropical flavors like lilikoi or pineapple.
